First Aid Supplies
Here are some things you should keep in a certain area to have on hand in case of emergency.
Vet specific stuff
Vet's business car/contact info
$150-200, at least to help cover emergency vet visits
Styptic powder or cornstarch/flour -- for accidental nicks when trimming nails (Cornstarch and flour are the more recommended of the choices because styptic powder will sting, but if the knick is bad and cornstarch doesn't work styptic powder should do the trick and is exactly what the vet would use)
Tweezers -- for easy access to anything you wouldn't be able to get with fingers (like fuzz in teeth or things between quills)
Small flashlight and magnifying glass (to see into the mouths and ears)
Q-tips
Saline wash -- for removing foreign objects from eyes
Suction bulb -- to clear noses or ears
Roll of paper towels
TIP: To get gauze and tape as well as some of these other products, try buying a human first aid kit to keep on hand. That way you have it in case someone around the house gets injured, also.
Food
Canned pumpkin -- plain, not the pumpkin pie filling which has added spices; this is good for treatment of both diarrhea and constipation
High quality wet cat food -- Wellness or Hills A/D (these are available from your vet) to help get a reluctant hedgie to eat something
Syringe-feeding materials
Syringes without needles attached -- for feeding if the hedgie will not eat (check with the vet or get some from a pharmacy)
Pedialyte -- for dehydration (freezer pops can be kept unrefrigerated and used in liquid for when needed to avoid wasting a bottle; powdered forms are also available). This should be room temperature before syringing.
Human Boost or Ensure -- for nutrition; vanilla and strawberry are good flavors for hedgie OR Pediasure -- strawberry, vanilla, banana cream
Other items
Human heating pad
Hand warmers -- for trip to vet, and in case power goes out
Light colored liners -- to put in cage for when going to vet so the color of bodily functions can easily be seen
A medium sized Sterlite container that is at least 15" tall works well for this. Drill holes in the lid for ventilation. Line it with a light colored liner so you can monitor the color of urine easily as well as be able to notice any other changes. Not only can you easily heat this, you can easily sterilize this when your hedgie no longer needs to be in there.
In the meantime, the container can store all your emergency products in one place.
