Links
This is just a collection of links that I found to be worthwhile to visit. They may or may not be hedgehog related.
I am an official Hedgehog Welfare Society (HWS) member--you should get involved also. It's free. There is a store there called Ruby's Rescue Shop that sells products for people AND hedgies. Consider buying from there. All the proceeds from the store's sales go toward rescue, research and education.
Each legitimate search on Good Search generates money for HWS--and all you have to do is click! You don't have to donate anything! Just go to GoodSearch.com and enter Hedgehog Welfare Society under "Who do you search for?" then click verify. After that, just search as you normally would.
Some of these charge a fee for membership, but all of them are official organizations dedicated to hedgehogs and most of the sites still have public information. You should consider membership.
Good Privately Owned Hedgehog Websites (Information-based, small businesses, etc):
The hedgehog wiki is put together by Hedgehog Central and features a compilation of information that should be very useful to hedgehog owners.
Put Zalea as your referrer if you join. :)
The Hedgie Den -- I highly recommend this site. You can buy many quality products here that you can't get from most other places, including durable liners and igloo covers. If you're going to buy, buy from the Hedgie Den! There is also care information, and lots of pictures.
Pixie's Exotic Hedgies -- a North Carolina located breeder with lots of great information on her site. (She sells her food mix, as well.)
Howell Hogs -- This is a breeder's site with lots of good information on it. Definitely worth a visit!
Jan Brett's homepage -- This is the website of an author. It contains tons of activities for kids (like coloring pages and games). Lots of fun activities to try, and many different projects/crafts. The site even has recipes. You can spend all day on there having fun. It's a wonderful resource.
Other useful sites:
This site has tons of coupons for buying pet food online.
Good causes:
Kilowatt Ours -- the average household uses 6 tons of coal each year. PER HOUSEHOLD. To get that coal, mountains are destroyed and environments are ruined. Children suffer from asthma all across the country because of all the pollution from burning coal--asthma is the #1 childhood illness now, and it has never been a problem before. By doing YOUR part, you can reduce the amount of coal used. And it's REALLY easy. Check out some of the tips on this website.
The Meatrix -- This is a website that explains, very well, the problems with concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). This is where livestock is kept in crowded conditions (a small confined area) for 45 days or more where there is no natural grass and fed grains that are pumped full of antibiotics. When the confinement area gets filled with feces, they are simply moved to a new confinement area. The reason you can get a full meal at fast food chains like Taco Bell (and other places, I'm not singling Taco Bell out--I love them!) so cheaply is due to these CAFOs. This is not saying that you shouldn't eat at fast food places or anything like that. Just that you should make educated choices about what you buy. When you go to the grocery store, if you buy organic and pay just a dollar or two more instead of buying the cheap meats and dairy products, you are showing the store that there is more of a demand for better animal treatment--and as more & more people do so, stores will start carrying more & more organic products and fewer of the CAFO products. As a result of this, prices on the organic products will likely drop. Not only is this more healthy for you, it is more humane for the animals and farmers won't have to pump the cattle/pigs/other animals full of antibiotics on a daily basis to keep them from getting diseases (confinement breeds diseases). Watch the videos on the website and check out some of the information for yourself. Everyone should make their own decision about this issue--but that decision should be an educated one.
